Memorial Bench Vandalised in Shocking Act of Cruelty in Hampshire
A heartfelt memorial bench dedicated to a beloved family man has been trashed in Sway, Hampshire. The bench honours Chris Sirl, who lost his battle with cancer in 2014. His widow, Katherine Sirl, had the bench installed at Jubilee Fields so locals could remember him – not a stone cold grave.
Family Tribute Smashed by Mindless Vandals
Chris, 45, was diagnosed with stomach, pancreatic, and liver cancer after months of illness. Despite fighting fiercely, he passed away on 22nd December 2014. Katherine explained that Chris wanted a special spot for the family to visit and reflect away from a graveyard.
But that meaningful memorial was callously ripped from its concrete base over the weekend. Vandals broke off a leg and dragged the bench across the grass, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake.
Widow Condemns Callous Crime
“This is vandalism and criminal damage to a nearly brand new memorial to a village community member, husband and father whose life was cut short in his prime,” said Mrs Sirl. “Yet somehow, no consequences follow. I am ashamed of society and disgusted that this behaviour is passively condoned.
It’s shocking to think someone would deface a memorial bench. They are just so heartless.”
Community Urged to Step Up
With four houses overlooking Jubilee Fields, Mrs Sirl appealed directly to parents. “If it was your kids, you have a duty to hold them accountable. If it was a thief trying to steal the bench, earn the money to replace it properly instead of ruining it.”
The damage has been reported to the police. Anyone with information is urged to call Hampshire Constabulary on 101.
