Shoreham Watchkeepers in Lifesaving Triple Rescue Drama

The Shoreham National Coastwatch Institution (NCI) sprang into action Sunday, playing a vital role in three separate maritime emergencies. Their sharp eyes and quick calls helped save lives along the Sussex coast.

Capsized Kayak Sparks Morning Rescue

Early Sunday, watchkeepers spotted a kayak turned over near the harbour. The paddler had been fishing when disaster struck. NCI immediately alerted HM Coastguard. Luckily, Shoreham Sailing Club was nearby racing, and one of their safety boats rushed over to help. They kept the Coastguard updated until the kayaker was safely back on shore.

Exhausted Wing Surfer Towed to Safety

Shortly after a watch change, NCI spotted a wing surfer struggling to stay afloat against the tide. They alerted Shoreham Port and HM Coastguard. A local fishing vessel heading into harbour was called in to assist. Acting on NCI’s guidance, the Coastguard directed the boat to the tired surfer, who was towed close enough to swim to shore safe and sound.

Kite Surfer and Kayaker Rescued off Lancing

Just as the wing surfer rescue wrapped up, NCI received alerts about an unmanned inflatable drifting out to sea and two people in trouble near Lancing—a kite surfer and a kayaker. The team quickly plotted their location for the Coastguard. The Shoreham RNLI inshore lifeboat was launched and brought both back to shore, handing them over to HM Coastguard for care.

Stay Alert, Stay Safe – Report Coastal Emergencies Fast

These close calls underline the importance of swift action and teamwork in maritime safety. Shoreham NCI urges beachgoers and sailors: always report emergencies immediately by dialing 999 and asking for the Coastguard. Quick reporting can save lives.
