Teen Jailed for Brutal Stabbing Murder of Jay Hughes
Jay Hughes was waiting for a friend outside a chicken shop when he was suddenly attacked and fatally stabbed. Nyron Baptiste, 18, from Penge, was found guilty of Jay’s murder on 20 July and has now been sentenced to life behind bars with a minimum of 19 years.
Calculated, Ruthless Attack
Baptiste appeared at the Old Bailey on 2 August where he was handed a life sentence. He also received an additional four months detention for possession of an offensive weapon, served concurrently. Previously unnamed due to his age, Baptiste has now been publicly identified after turning 18.
The judge described the “brazen, quick and ruthless attack” as planned, stating Baptiste “intended to kill” Jay.
How The Tragic Murder Unfolded
- On 1 November 2018, 15-year-old Jay was outside a chicken shop on Randlesdown Road, Bellingham, waiting for a friend.
- A young acquaintance began speaking to Jay when a black Ford Galaxy stopped nearby. Three men armed with large machetes jumped out.
- The acquaintance ran, chased by two men, but Jay stayed put, unaware of what was coming.
- Baptiste approached Jay and stabbed him once in the left upper side of his chest.
- Witnesses heard Baptiste say, “I got one” as Jay fell into the chicken shop.
- Paramedics rushed Jay to Kings College Hospital, but the stab wound pierced his heart, and he died at 8.15pm.
Investigation and Arrest
Homicide detectives launched an immediate investigation. CCTV captured the car, later found in Linden Grove, with Jay’s blood inside. Baptiste initially fled before being arrested in Gravesend, Kent in December 2018. A large hunting knife was discovered on him at the time of arrest.
Heartbreaking Victim Impact Statements
Jay’s mother, Cindy Hughes: “Jay was my first son and very special to me. I loved his zest for life, his smile, and his kind heart. The shock and devastation have left me empty and sad. Nyron Baptiste, you’ve changed our lives forever. My hope is you can be truly rehabilitated and understand the pain you caused.”
Grandmother, Sophia Sewell: “This was unacceptable. I hope you reflect on the pain you caused our family. Maybe when you have children, you will regret taking an innocent life.”
Detective’s Warning and Community Praise
Detective Sergeant Anthony Atkin: “Jay was a 15-year-old just buying food. Baptiste armed himself and carried out this ruthless attack without provocation. Despite his denials, the jury saw through his lies. He showed no remorse and now faces at least 19 years in prison to reflect on his actions. My thoughts are with Jay’s devastated family. I thank those who tried to help Jay and assisted the investigation — proving good community spirit can shine through even in the darkest moments.”
