An 82-year-old paedophile, Louis Rumis, was caught with a monstrous cache of more than 75,000 child abuse images – but dodged prison because of his age.

Disturbing Details of the Depraved Collection

When arrested, Rumis chillingly boasted he “enjoyed” viewing the horrific material, which included videos of babies as young as six months old being abused. Police swooped on his home in Everton, near Lymington, seizing dozens of SD cards, hard drives, and storage devices loaded with illegal images. The sheer volume was so immense that officers gave up trying to count it all. Yet, even after the raid, Rumis kept downloading more vile content, admitting to officers that he “enjoyed doing it”.

Judge Slams Paedophile but Suspends Jail Sentence

Rumis admitted three charges of possession of indecent images. His cache included 4,091 Category A images—the worst kind, including 232 sickening videos—alongside 10,445 Category B and 60,787 Category C images. At Southampton Crown Court, Judge Nigel Peters KC handed down an 18-month suspended sentence, warning Rumis there would be “no mercy” if he reoffends. The judge made it clear his leniency was solely due to Rumis’ age and guilty plea. “Had you been somewhat younger, I would have found it very difficult not to send you to prison,” he said.

Failed Reform and Harsh Warnings

Prosecutor Oliver Hirsch revealed police first raided Rumis’ home in April 2024. More images turned up on a further search in May 2025. Rumis claimed he never paid for the images but referred to them as “child porn”. Defence lawyer Ed Wylde said: “He’s ashamed of where he finds himself. He is truly sorry. There’s a real prospect of rehabilitation.” Judge Peters condemned Rumis for continuing his offences even after being released on bail. In addition to the suspended sentence, Rumis faces a sexual harm prevention order, 30 days of rehabilitation, and must pay a £150 victim surcharge.
