Ex-GMP Inspector Banned for Sexting Scandal – 5 Years of Shocking Misconduct Exposed

Sex Worker Chats on Duty: 600+ Messages Uncovered

Former Greater Manchester Police (GMP) Inspector Toby Knight has been banned from policing after a damning investigation revealed he contacted sex workers over 600 times during duty and beyond. The probe, led by the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) and GMP’s Anti-Corruption Unit, exposed 245 messages sent from his work phone between September 2018 and March 2024—176 of them during working hours, training, or sick leave.

Additionally, Knight’s personal phone showed 357 messages and calls with sex workers between May 2023 and April 2024, all unrelated to police work. During a criminal interview in April 2024, the ex-inspector admitted the contact was purely personal and occurred while on duty.

Serious Breaches of Police Conduct

The disciplinary panel slammed Knight for violating multiple Standards of Professional Behaviour, including:

  • Authority, Respect, and Courtesy
  • Discreditable Conduct
  • Honesty and Integrity
  • Orders and Instructions

Had he not quit one day before, the panel said he would have been sacked immediately. Knight is now on the police barred list, ending any chance of returning to law enforcement.

Public Outrage Explodes on Social Media

The scandal sparked fury online, with outraged users on X (formerly Twitter) and Facebook blasting Knight and the GMP. One user asked, “How can we trust the police when officers abuse their power like this?” Another warned, “This damages the reputation of hardworking officers across the country.”

The backlash has renewed calls for stronger oversight and transparency within the police force to rebuild public trust.

IOPC Warns of ‘Serious Betrayal of Public Trust’

Amanda Rowe, IOPC Director, condemned the misconduct:

“Every police officer holds an incredibly privileged position in society, and it is vital their behaviour does not discredit the service. Cases like these have the real potential to impact public confidence in the police.”

With Knight’s conduct going unchecked for over five years, the IOPC demands tighter GMP oversight and better ethics training to prevent future scandals.
