A man was killed on the M20 after being hit by a van driven by a texting driver. Ionut Bejan was caught using WhatsApp just moments before the deadly crash.

WhatsApp Distraction Ends in Tragedy

Bejan, 23, frantically typed and edited WhatsApp messages — even updating a group chat photo — while driving his overloaded Iveco box van. At around 10.10pm on 14 February 2025, a family pulled over on the hard shoulder between junctions 8 and 9 near Charing, suspecting a car fault. When 71-year-old Zdzislaw Tarbaj stepped out to check, Bejan’s van smashed into him at high speed. Emergency services rushed to the scene but sadly confirmed Mr Tarbaj was dead.

Overloaded Van and Reckless Driving

Police discovered Bejan’s van was carrying more than 5,000kg — well over the 3,500kg legal limit. Phone records showed nine WhatsApp messages sent just before and after the crash, including one edited in a way impossible to do hands-free. Bejan, from Hereford, was arrested and charged with causing death by dangerous driving.

Jail Time for Fatal Negligence

At Maidstone Crown Court on 12 November, Bejan pleaded guilty. He was slammed with a hefty nine-year, nine-month prison sentence and banned from driving for 13 and a half years. He will also have to pass an extended driving test before regaining his licence.

Detective Constable Kayleigh Archer said: “A devoted husband, father and grandfather lost his life because of one man’s reckless and illegal choices. Bejan chose to use his phone while driving and knowingly overloaded his van. The victim’s family, present during the crash, describe him as a hero and guiding light and have been left traumatised. We hope this sentence brings some closure.”

A Stark Warning to All Drivers

“Our message to all motorists is clear,” added DC Archer. “Drive responsibly. Stick to speed limits, never use mobiles behind the wheel, stay alert, and keep your vehicle roadworthy. Ignoring these simple rules endangers lives.”
