Portsmouth Music Hub Scoops Top National Award
Portsmouth Music Hub has smashed it at the Music Education Council’s Major Award, taking home the prestigious prize at a star-studded event in London. The Music Teachers Award for Excellence ceremony was held on Thursday 25th February at the swanky Carlton Tower Hotel, hosted by Classic FM’s Margherita Taylor and attended by 280 big names from the music world.
City’s Music Hub Shines on National Stage
The Music Education Council (MEC), a leading body uniting music pros, businesses, and educators across the UK, picked Portsmouth out from over 120 Music Hubs nationwide. The Hub was honoured for its top-notch music teaching and innovative ways of engaging thousands of kids and teens from all corners of the city.
“This is excellent news for the Hub and it proves that Portsmouth is firmly on the national cultural map,” said Sue Beckett, CEO of Portsmouth Music Hub, accepting the award in London. “We are lucky to have so many passionate people committed to delivering the best music education and cultural experiences. This Award belongs to our teachers, venues, Hub Partners, and the entire Music Hub team.”
Building Portsmouth’s Musical Future Since 2011
Founded in 2011, Portsmouth Music Hub has worked hand-in-hand with schools, colleges, and academies across the city to make music education accessible to all young people. The Hub boasts over 40 partner organisations, including the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, The Guildhall, and the Royal Marines Band Service. Together, they create opportunities for young musicians to perform with professionals and soak up Portsmouth’s rich cultural scene.
Celebrating Local Talent and Wider Partnerships
This year, Portsmouth shared the Major Award with Bournemouth’s SoundStorm Music Education Agency. Alison Jeffery, Director of Children’s Services at Portsmouth City Council, praised the win:
“Portsmouth Music Hub brings together individuals, groups, and partners with a shared vision: to provide creative and musical opportunities for our city’s young people. Winning this award is a fantastic achievement and a testament to the hard work, enthusiasm, and dedication of the Hub team, schools, and all their partners who work tirelessly to enrich Portsmouth’s cultural life.”
