Snow and Ice Warnings Slam Northern UK
Winter Chaos Hits Roads and Rails
Brace yourselves, Northern Ireland, northwest England, and north Wales – snow and ice warnings are in full effect from midday Monday until midnight. Drivers are urged to leave extra time for their journeys as icy roads threaten to cause major travel chaos.
The Met Office predicts a biting frost overnight into Tuesday, plunging temperatures between -4°C and a frosty -8°C. Snow has already dusted southeast England, while Scotland faces a yellow weather warning for snow and ice until Wednesday.
Scotland and Northern England Take the Snow Brunt
BBC forecaster Billy Payne reports a few centimetres of snow fell overnight even on low ground, with a hefty 18cm (7in) recorded at Loch Glascarnoch in Scotland. Expect more frost and ice in the coming nights, as daytime temps remain stubbornly low.
Despite the chill, experts say this cold snap won’t hit the national transport system as hard as December’s freeze. Met Office meteorologist Craig Snell warns commuters: “This could be a problem during rush hour, causing a few issues on the roads. Flooding is still a possibility.”
Mixed Weather and Flood Fears
After weekend floods drenched large swathes of the UK – with over 100 flood warnings and 172 alerts still active – icy conditions now top the danger list for motorists. RAC’s Rod Dennis says: “It’s now ice that poses the greatest danger to drivers, especially on rural roads that haven’t been gritted.”
Sarah Cook from the Environment Agency confirms flood clean-up continues in the hardest-hit areas, warning that Sunday night’s rain could spark minor flooding in the south. She urges locals to steer clear of swollen rivers and never drive through flood water.
What’s Next?
- A yellow ice warning hits the southwest from midnight to 9am Tuesday.
- Snow in southeast England and northern England will mostly thaw through Monday morning.
- Most of the UK should see dry and sunny spells Monday, but chilly weather with occasional showers continues through the week.
- Temperatures to rise by the weekend, easing travel woes.
Stay tuned and plan ahead – the UK’s winter grip isn’t letting go just yet.
