A man who dragged a pubgoer to the ground and repeatedly kicked him in the head in a “vicious” attack in Peterborough has been jailed for five years. Abdiftah Ahmed, 27, attacked the man shortly after he had left a pub in Broadway and was looking for a taxi in the early hours of December 22, 2019. The victim, who was in his 40s, was dragged to the ground before Ahmed kicked him multiple times in the head. Ahmed then walked away from the injured man but returned carrying his mobile phone. He appeared to take a photograph or video of the victim before kicking him twice more.
Victim required surgery
Members of the public went to the victim’s aid following the attack at around 12.35am. He was taken to hospital suffering from a broken nose and other facial injuries which required surgery. Police launched an investigation and obtained CCTV footage of the assault. An officer subsequently identified Ahmed from the footage, while examination of data from his mobile phone confirmed he had been in the area at the time. Ahmed, of Brantwood Road, Luton, was arrested and charged with causing grievous bodily harm with intent. He appeared before Peterborough Magistrates’ Court on October 26, 2020.
Five-year prison sentence
Ahmed later admitted the lesser offence of causing grievous bodily harm without intent. He appeared at Cambridge Crown Court on Tuesday, August 4, where he was sentenced to five years in prison. The sentencing brings the case to a conclusion more than six years after the attack took place.
