Flights at Bristol Airport remain suspended for a second consecutive day after a defect was discovered on the runway, leaving passengers facing cancellations, delays and diversions. Operations at the South West’s busiest airport were halted at around 6pm on Friday after the problem was identified during checks. The airport has confirmed that its runway will remain closed until at least 8am on Saturday, August 8, while engineers assess the defect and carry out repairs. Both departing and arriving services have been affected, with passengers urged to check directly with their airlines for the latest information.
Runway closed on safety grounds
Bristol Airport said in a statement: “Due to a defect on the runway, we have suspended operations in order to assess and repair the issue. “We apologise for any inconvenience. Safety is always our number one priority. “Customers should refer to their airlines with any flight queries. “All flights are currently suspended until at least SAT 0800hrs.” The precise nature and extent of the runway defect has not been confirmed.
Passengers face disruption and diversions
The closure has caused significant disruption, with departing flights unable to take off and incoming aircraft affected by the suspension. Some passengers have been left facing cancellations or lengthy delays while airlines make alternative arrangements.
