The Red Arrows will not perform at this year’s Airbourne: Eastbourne International Airshow after severe weather delayed the RAF team’s return journey from North America. The Royal Air Force Aerobatic Team had been expected back in Britain following its tour of the United States, but prolonged poor weather across north-eastern Canada forced the postponement of its Atlantic crossing. The team now expects to resume its multi-stage journey home during the week beginning August 10, subject to suitable weather conditions. The revised schedule means the Red Arrows will miss Airbourne in Eastbourne, as well as appearances at the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo and Lyme Regis Lifeboat Week. All three events will still go ahead.
Red Arrows stranded in Canada
The Red Arrows are currently at Canadian Forces Base Goose Bay while they wait for conditions suitable for the journey across the Atlantic. Unlike some larger military aircraft, the team’s nine Hawk jets have a limited range and cannot refuel in the air. Returning from North America therefore involves a carefully planned series of flights and refuelling stops. Suitable weather is particularly important because of the limited number of diversion airfields available on parts of the route. RAF support aircraft must also be positioned correctly, including assets providing search-and-rescue cover and aircraft carrying essential equipment and technical support. The RAF said a reasonable amount of contingency time had been included in the original schedule, based on previous Atlantic crossings in 2019 and 2024. However, weather conditions in north-eastern Canada proved particularly challenging.
‘Safety is the only factor’
Wing Commander Sasha Nash, Officer Commanding the RAF Aerobatic Team, apologised to those who had been looking forward to seeing the Red Arrows. She said: “Every effort is being made to ensure the Red Arrows can recommence the busy display season as soon as possible. “However, safety is the only factor that will determine the timing of the team’s return from Canada.” The team has used the unexpected delay to carry out scheduled engineering work on its Hawk aircraft that had originally been planned for after their return to Britain. The RAF hopes this will allow the Red Arrows to return to their remaining 2026 display programme as efficiently as possible once they reach the UK.
Eastbourne Airshow will continue
Despite the loss of one of Airbourne’s most popular attractions, the Eastbourne International Airshow will continue with an extensive flying programme. The RAF Typhoon Display Team and Battle of Britain Memorial Flight (BBMF) remain scheduled to appear. The Red Arrows have traditionally been one of the biggest draws at Eastbourne, with huge crowds gathering along the East Sussex seafront to watch the team’s displays. Elsewhere, a RAF C-17 Globemaster and two Typhoons are scheduled to conduct a flypast over the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo on Saturday, August 15. The BBMF is also scheduled to carry out flypasts during Lyme Regis Lifeboat Week on August 21 and 22. The Red Arrows thanked supporters for messages sent to the team during the delay and said the focus remains on safely returning to Britain before resuming the remainder of the summer display season.
