The much-loved drama, which first aired in 2012 and is based on Jennifer Worth’s memoirs, continues to capture hearts worldwide with its charming characters and gripping plots set in the 1950s East End.
Meet the New Midwives Shaking Up Nonnatus House
The new season introduces two exciting characters: Joyce Highland and Rosalind Clifford.
- Joyce Highland – Played by Renee Bailey, Joyce is a bright, hardworking pupil midwife from Trinidad. Behind her tough exterior lies a complicated past, adding depth to her story. Bailey, known for roles in Netflix’s Rebel Cheer Squad and BBC’s Mood, says Joyce is “driven” but also “tender,” challenging usual stereotypes of strong Black women.
- Rosalind Clifford – Portrayed by Natalie Quarry, Rosalind is honest, kind-hearted, and resilient despite a sheltered upbringing. Quarry, with credits in BBC’s Doctors and the series Atlanta, describes her character’s attitude as a pragmatic “just got to get on with it” British spirit, perfect for midwifery life.
Farewell to Nurse Lucille Robinson
While new faces join the roster, fans will say goodbye to Nurse Lucille Robinson (Leonie Elliott), who left the show in 2023. Her departure marks the end of an era but leaves space for fresh stories to unfold.
