A man has been charged with murder following the death of a 39-year-old mother-of-four who was found unresponsive at a home in Breightmet. Emergency services were called to the property in the Bolton area during the early hours of Tuesday morning, where Emma McGowan was discovered unresponsive. Despite the efforts of emergency crews, Emma could not be saved. Greater Manchester Police launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death and arrested a 36-year-old man shortly afterwards. Joseph Webb has since been charged with Emma’s murder. He was charged on Thursday, August 6, and remanded in custody to appear before Manchester and Salford Magistrates’ Court.
Family pay tribute to devoted mum
Emma’s family have been left devastated by her death and described the 39-year-old as a “much-loved daughter and adored mother to four young children.” They described her as a caring and gentle woman whose death had left “a hole that can never be filled.” Specialist police officers are continuing to support Emma’s family as the investigation progresses. The family have asked for privacy while they grieve their loss.
Police say incident believed to be isolated
Detective Chief Inspector Tony Platten said his thoughts remained with Emma’s loved ones during what he described as an “incredibly tragic time”. Police believe the incident was isolated and have said there is not believed to be any wider threat to members of the public. Forensic investigators remained at the scene as detectives carried out enquiries, including speaking to residents and gathering potential evidence. Officers also maintained a visible presence in the neighbourhood while the investigation continued. Residents have expressed shock following Emma’s death, with floral tributes reportedly being left near the property. Greater Manchester Police is continuing to appeal for anyone with information which could assist the investigation to come forward. As criminal proceedings are now active, Joseph Webb is entitled to a fair trial and nothing should be published which could prejudice those proceedings.
