Fire Breaks Out in 10-Storey Block – Residents Evacuated Safely
Flames damaged a ground-floor flat in a 10-storey block last night. Two men managed to flee the affected flat before firefighters arrived, with no injuries reported.
Smoke Spreads, Warning Issued
Emergency 999 Control Officers alerted eight more residents in nearby flats as smoke seeped through open windows. They were advised to evacuate and left safely before the fire brigade showed up.
Firefighters Rescue Ten More Residents
Wearing breathing apparatus, firefighters led 10 people to safety using special fire escape hoods. These hoods protect users for up to 15 minutes against deadly gases like carbon monoxide and hydrogen cyanide, filtering toxic smoke to ease breathing.
“Fire escape hoods don’t supply oxygen but can be lifesavers during smoke emergencies,” experts said.
Fire Under Control in Two Hours
The brigade was called at 7:05pm and brought the blaze under control by 9:02pm. Four fire engines and around 25 firefighters from Battersea, Chelsea, Clapham, and Lambeth responded swiftly.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
