Travellers’ Wild Horse Races Shut Down A33 for Second Day
Hampshire police slammed the brakes on the A33 for a second day running after hundreds of travellers took over the busy road with illegal horse and trap races. The stretch between Larkwhistle Farm Road and Woodmancott junctions was forced to close as 4x4s surrounded the races, passengers dangled from vehicles, and crowds packed the roadside.
Dangerous Races Spark Fears and Injuries
Footage from Saturday reveals punters betting big on the fastest horse and rider in chaotic scenes. Tragically, the “winning” horse needed nine stitches after suffering a leg injury during the race. Police, aware of the highway hazards, coordinated with the RSPCA, who are now investigating possible animal cruelty.
Police Seize Vehicles and Make Arrest Amid Public Outcry
- Three vehicles were seized by Hampshire police.
- One person was arrested for drug driving after attending the unauthorised event.
Local MP Steve Brine has slammed the lack of police action earlier, demanding stronger intervention to tackle the illegal gatherings.
Community Clash and Police Crackdown
The traveller community hit back, accusing police of racism. A spokesperson said: “Racist again … against travellers.” Hampshire police responded firmly, stating: “We have increased patrols in the area. Officers will engage with those in attendance and use enforcement action where necessary and proportionate. We will deal with any offences and gather evidence to take further action where required.”
