Gas Explosion Tears Through Kingstanding Home

A terrifying gas explosion ripped through a house on Dulwich Road, Kingstanding, just after 8.30pm last night. One woman has died, and a man remains in critical condition after being pulled from the wreckage.

Rescue Heroes Brave Flames to Save Man

Martin Ward-White, Incident Commander for West Midlands Fire Service, revealed: “We received calls just after half eight. When we arrived, it was clear that a gas explosion had occurred.”

Residents describe the chaos as they dodged flaming debris and thick dust to drag an injured man alive from the burning ruins. One unnamed local said: “Everyone was watching, the house was on fire, nobody was going in, so we could see a way in – me and about a dozen others went into the house.”

The man’s cousin took to social media, calling those who ran into the blaze “heroes” for risking their lives to save him.

Devastation and Damage Across Neighbourhood

West Midlands Police confirmed one house was completely destroyed, with at least five or six homes and several vehicles severely damaged in the blast.

Rick Payne, a ward city councillor, told reporters he heard the “massive explosion” and knew instantly it was a gas blast. “The house where the explosion occurred has been physically destroyed,” he said.

Emergency Response in Full Force

West Midlands Ambulance Service reported rescuers brought the man from the wreckage to Queen Elizabeth Hospital with life-threatening injuries. Four other men suffered minor wounds and were treated on the scene.

Firefighters, paramedics, Cadent Gas teams and National Grid workers rushed to the scene. Six fire crews, three ambulances, paramedic officers, a trauma doctor, and a hazardous area response team battled the chaos.

Cadent assured the public it was “too early to speculate” on the cause but urged anyone smelling gas to call 0800 111 999 immediately.

Road Closures and Safety Warnings

Dulwich Road and nearby streets remain closed as the investigation continues. Authorities warn residents to avoid the area while emergency teams work to secure the scene.

West Midlands Fire Service said: “The explosion, cause unknown, destroyed one property and damaged others nearby. Our thoughts are with those affected.”
