UK Space Agency Pumps £15m Into Earth Observation Satellite Tech

The UK Space Agency has just unveiled a fresh £15 million pot to boost cutting-edge satellite Earth Observation (EO) tech. This cash injection aims to turbocharge our grasp of the planet and the ticking climate crisis.

Funding Targets Game-Changing Environmental Tech

This latest funding is set to back research and experimental development of space-based instruments. These could revolutionise weather forecasting, climate monitoring, environmental management, farming, urban planning and scientific research.

The UK already leads the globe in Earth Observation tools and data use. This new money will speed up the development of homegrown EO technologies, with satellites set to launch in the coming years.

Government Committed to Science Superpower Status

George Freeman MP, Minister of State for Science, Innovation and Technology, said:

“Earth Observation technology is critical to tackling the fundamental challenges of our age – from monitoring climate change to responding to humanitarian disasters – and so we owe it to the future of our planet to harness the UK’s world-leading skills in this field.”

“This pivotal technology doesn’t stop there. From ensuring the safety of bridges to helping farmers get the best from their land, this £15m investment will boost our economy and drive forward our ambition to make the UK a science superpower.”

Funding Breakdown & What’s Next

The funds, dished out via the Centre for Earth Observation Instrumentation (CEOI), form part of a hefty £400 million boost for the UK’s EO sector announced back in 2022.

Grants come in three tiers:

  • Pathfinder projects: Up to £75,000 for fresh ideas and early-stage research.
  • Fast Track projects: Up to £250,000 to develop experimental hardware.
  • Flagship projects: Up to £3 million for advanced technology testing, including vacuum chamber trials and airborne demos.

CEOI’s Director Chris Brownsword said:

“This call is the 16th from CEOI and represents a big leap in funding size. It will support new innovations and speed up development of UK-made instruments.”

“Past calls have united academia and industry to deliver UK-owned tech breakthroughs. We’re excited to see what comes next.”

Proven Track Record Since 2016

Since 2016, CEOI’s EO programme has handed out £20 million across 57 projects. Highlights include:

  • Next Generation Synthetic Aperture Radar for oceanography – led by the National Oceanography Centre with Airbus.
  • Compact Infrared Imager and Radiometer – developed by the University of Oxford.
  • Laser Heterodyne Radiometer – led by RAL Space.

Many of these innovations are now on course for deployment in commercial, public, and research space missions.
