Pope Francis Dies Aged 88, Requests Humble Burial in Rome

Pope Francis, the revered leader of the Catholic Church for over a decade, died on Monday, April 21, aged 88. Following a cerebral stroke and irreversible heart failure, the pontiff passed away peacefully. Now, his final wishes have been revealed — a modest burial in a simple underground tomb at the Papal Basilica of St Mary Major in Rome.

Simple Tomb, Solemn Tribute

The late pontiff’s last will, dated June 29, 2022, and released by the Vatican, spells out his humble burial plans. He asked for only his name, “Franciscus,” on the tomb — no grand decoration or elaborate monument. The pope specified his remains be laid to rest in a niche between two sacred spots inside the basilica: the Pauline Chapel, home to the famed Salus Populi Romani icon, and the Sforza Chapel.

“I wish that my last earthly journey conclude precisely in this ancient Marian sanctuary,” Pope Francis wrote. “Where I went for prayer at the beginning and end of each Apostolic journey to confidently entrust my intentions to the Immaculate Mother and thank Her for her docile and maternal care.”

Humble to the End

Pope Francis’s burial wishes echo the humility that defined his papacy. He famously shunned luxury — living simply and avoiding the lavish papal apartments. His final gesture reinforces his lifelong commitment to modesty and service.

The pope also stated that the burial costs should be covered by a private benefactor, with the arrangements managed by Cardinal Rolandas Makrickas.

Legacy of Service and Global Mourning

In his will, Francis offered the suffering he endured late in life “for peace in the world and brotherhood among peoples.” His death has sparked heartfelt tributes worldwide. UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer called him “a moral giant who spoke for peace, justice, and the marginalised.”

The Vatican is expected to announce full funeral details soon, with ceremonies likely held this week at St Peter’s Basilica before the pope’s final interment at St Mary Major.

What Comes Next for the Catholic Church?

The College of Cardinals will soon gather for a conclave to elect Francis’s successor. The Catholic world now enters a time of mourning and transition, reflecting on the legacy of a pope who championed humility, reform, and compassion across faiths.

Pope Francis’s spirit and message will live on in millions across the globe.
