Rogue Trader Strikes in New Ash Green – Pensioner Scammed £1,500

New Ash Green residents are on high alert after a nasty rogue trader scam ripped off a pensioner for £1,500. On 10 October, a man claiming a loose roof tile tricked his way into a home near North Ash Road. Before the homeowner could blink, the scammer had climbed a ladder, ripped off tiles, and left a gaping hole in the roof.

The victim was then bullied into coughing up £1,500 on the spot. The bold brazen scam has sent shockwaves through the local community.

Suspects Spotted Cruising in Blue Honda and White Van

Kent Police were alerted on 18 October and are warning that others could be targeted next. They describe the main suspect as a man in his 50s, accompanied by a younger sidekick possibly in his late teens. The pair was seen speeding away in a blue Honda CRV.

Similar shady door-to-door offers have hit Edenbridge, where two men in a white Peugeot Partner van have been hawking roof and gutter repairs. Police say these dodgy traders often peddle unnecessary and substandard work.

Police Urge Caution – How to Spot a Rogue Trader

Kent Police advise:

  • Ignore unexpected doorstep offers for home or garden work. If pressured, call the cops immediately.
  • Beware of traders demanding cash upfront or insisting you withdraw money from your bank.
  • Use vetted tradespeople from the Trading Standards Approved Trader Scheme.
  • Always get written quotes and check tradespeople’s company affiliation.
  • Shop around – get at least three quotes to avoid overpaying.
