Landscape Artist of the Year Returns with a Bang
Sky Arts’ smash hit Landscape Artist of the Year is back on 11th January 2023, airing on Sky Arts, Freeview, and NOW. Fan favourites Joan Bakewell and Stephen Mangan return to host the thrilling new eight-episode series packed with stunning locations and fierce artistic battles.
Stunning UK Locations Take Centre Stage
The series criss-crosses the UK, featuring some of the most breathtaking and challenging sites ever. From the gothic Castle Ward in Northern Ireland—which doubled as Winterfell in Game of Thrones—to the vibrant chaos of Blackpool Pleasure Beach, artists will be pushed to their limits.
- Royal Ascot makes its debut as a paint spot, renowned as one of the toughest locations to capture
- Semi-finalists tackle the engineering wonder of the 1 Barrier
- Finalists face off in the whimsical Italianate village of Portmeirion, Wales
Battle for £10,000 and Artistic Glory
Each heat features eight artists painting en plein air in just four hours. Judges Tai Shan Schierenberg, Kathleen Soriano, and Kate Bryan critique their work, choosing semi-finalists who move closer to the crown. Alongside the official contestants, 50 wildcards—a mix of pros and amateurs—hope to snag a surprise semi-final spot.
The winner walks away with a £10,000 commission from Royal Museums Greenwich, tasked with creating a piece inspired by Dutch seascape masters, The Van de Veldes. Their masterpiece will be exhibited alongside a Dutch painting exhibition at the Queen’s House in March 2023.
