Major Water Main Burst Sparks Flood Chaos in Eltham
Emergency crews scrambled to Eltham Road early this morning after a massive water main burst, flooding the area and causing widespread disruption. Around 70 firefighters and 10 fire engines are battling the deluge.
Basement Flats and Fire Station Flooded
The burst pipe caused severe flooding over a 600m by 200m area, including three basement flats submerged under roughly 20cm of water. Even the local fire station at Lee Green was hit hard by the floodwaters.
“We’re really sorry if you have low pressure or no water following a large burst pipe early this morning on the A20 Eltham Road, in SE12,” Thames Water said. “We’re on site and working to shut off flow from the burst. After that, supplies should begin to return to the affected area.”
“We’d also like to apologise to drivers who have been inconvenienced by the A20 closure.”
London Fire Brigade Responds with Full Force
The London Fire Brigade was alerted at 4.38 a.m. and quickly dispatched crews from Lewisham, Eltham, East Greenwich, and surrounding stations.
“Ten fire engines and around 70 firefighters have been called to flooding on Meadowcourt Road in Blackheath and Eltham Road,” said a London Fire Brigade spokesman.
“Crews are working to divert flood water after the rupture.”
Transport Chaos as TfL Declares Major Incident
The A20 Eltham Road remains closed, causing headaches for commuters and local drivers. Transport for London has declared a major incident in response to the burst water main and ensuing floods.
Emergency services continue to work tirelessly to drain floodwaters and restore normality to the neighbourhood.
