Fatal Crash Shuts Key Kent Road
A major artery linking the M2 and Sittingbourne is shut both ways after a deadly smash at dawn.
The tragedy struck near the Keycol Hill roundabout, where the A249 dual carriageway crosses.
Man Killed in Early Morning Collision
Shortly after 1 a.m. on Wednesday, June 29, 2022, Kent Police and emergency crews raced to the scene following reports of a person struck by a vehicle.
Despite efforts, the victim was pronounced dead at the scene.
The coroner is now involved. Police describe the death as unexplained but not suspicious.
Investigation Underway – Witnesses Sought
The family of the deceased has been informed and is receiving support from specially trained officers.
Authorities are hunting for witnesses and anyone with dashcam footage to aid the probe.
A police cordon remains in place while specialist collision investigators work through the scene, which is expected to keep the A249 closed all morning.
Kent Police have also deployed their drone team to capture aerial images of the crash site.
Traffic Chaos as Roads Remain Closed
A Highways England spokesman said:
“The A249 near Sittingbourne is closed both ways between the A2 (Key Street) and B2006 due to a police-led incident. Kent Police are leading the investigation, with National Highways officers helping manage traffic.
“It’s uncertain when the road will reopen, but closures are likely to continue throughout the morning.”
Motorists are urged to avoid the area and seek alternative routes as police continue piecing together what happened in this fatal early morning crash.
