New BBC Drama “Lockerbie” to Revisit Tragedy of Pan Am Flight 103
On December 21, 1988, Pan Am Flight 103 exploded over the Scottish town of Lockerbie, killing 270 people — including 43 Brits and 190 Americans. It remains the deadliest terror attack on British soil and a defining moment in terror history.
Star Writers and Global Production Back Epic 6-Part Series
Now, the shocking events will be brought to life in a riveting six-episode drama. Acclaimed novelist and screenwriter Jonathan Lee leads the writing team, with Scottish screenwriter Gillian Roger Park penning two episodes. Produced by World Productions and MGM Television, “Lockerbie” will air first on BBC One and iPlayer before landing on Netflix worldwide. Julia Stannard will produce and Michael Keillor will direct.
Deep Dive into Investigation and Impact
The series will explore the intense investigation spanning Scotland, the US, and Malta — right through to the 2000 Camp Zeist trial and a fresh indictment as recent as 2022. It will also capture the heart-wrenching impact on the tight-knit Lockerbie community and the families torn apart by loss.
“It’s a privilege to bring this defining world history event to the screen,” said Jonathan Lee, honouring the courage shown at the time.
Careful Storytelling with Exclusive Insights
Initiator and Executive Producer Adam Morane-Griffiths conducted exclusive interviews with Scottish police and US investigators, many sharing their stories for the very first time. Filming is set for later this year across Scotland, Malta, and Toronto.
BBC Commissioning Editor Gaynor Holmes promised: “The series will be handled with the utmost care to reflect the devastating events and profound effect on those who lost loved ones.”
Netflix’s Mona Qureshi added the drama will capture both the epic scale and intimate human stories that continue to reverberate decades on.
“Lockerbie” aims to shed new light on one of the darkest days in recent history, ensuring the legacy and lessons are not forgotten.
