From Tree to Treasure: Three Oaks Gets a Stunning Second Life

Highways England has unveiled breathtaking artworks crafted from the oak tree felled during a £24 million upgrade at Northamptonshire’s A45/A6 Chowns Mill roundabout. The magnificent Three Oaks, sadly cut down for safety, now lives on as unique benches in a beautiful green space for all to enjoy.

Oak Tree Transformation: Woodcarver Carrie Yuen Works Magic

After all attempts to save the beloved Three Oaks failed, the project team brought in talented woodcarver Carrie Yuen. She transformed the three hefty trunks into three stunning benches, each showcasing intricate wildlife carvings.

The benches were officially handed over to Mayor Councillor Tina Reavey at Castle Fields, Higham Ferrers, where they enhance the new Timber Trim Trail created by the town council.

Mayor Councillor Tina Reavey said:

“I am truly honoured to unveil these benches, skilfully carved by Carrie to depict the rich wildlife that once surrounded Three Oaks. It’s a shame to lose such a cherished tree, but turning its wood into artwork is a perfect tribute.”

“Thanks to everyone involved – Higham Ferrers Town Council, Highways England, Ground Control, Carnell, and local campaigner Justina Bryan – for bringing Three Oaks back to life in this special way.”

“I encourage everyone to come see the benches for themselves. I’m certain you’ll be as thrilled and impressed as I am.”

Wildlife Wonders Carved in Wood

The artworks shine through three nature-themed benches:

  • Forest Friends: Featuring fox, badger, rabbit, squirrel, owl, mole, and mouse.
  • Winged Wonders: Depicting butterflies, moths, dragonflies, and bats.
  • Mini Marvels: Showcasing bugs like caterpillars, spiders, beetles, ladybirds, worms, and millipedes.

Smaller carved pieces, including owls and mushrooms, will raise funds for the Mayor’s charities. Some branches were donated to Stanwick Lakes to boost local wildlife habitats.

Project Praise and Ambitious Upgrades at Chowns Mill

Highways England’s Dave Marlow said:

“It’s fantastic to see these beautiful benches in place. Carrie has done incredible work, and I’m sure locals will admire them for generations.”

“While we were disappointed to lose Three Oaks, we’re proud to help preserve its legacy. Thanks to the town council for finding these artworks a perfect new home.”

The Chowns Mill roundabout improvements include a half hamburger interchange, widened approaches, and a new link road connecting the A6 South with the A5028. Highways England plans to plant up to 1,500 new trees and wildflower meadows, creating a greener, less congested junction.
