Chilling Attack in Central Brighton

A Brazilian tourist has been locked up for 13 years after raping a 17-year-old boy in central Brighton. Rafael Nascimento, 38, was found guilty at Lewes Crown Court on Friday, 17 April. The brutal attack happened in Regent Hill back in August 2025. In the early hours of 10 August, the teenager was waiting for public transport to restart on Dyke Road when Nascimento approached him, asking where to buy cigarettes. The victim kindly helped and even went with him to a nearby shop. But the nightmare was just beginning. Nascimento earned the boy’s trust and convinced him to head to a property in Regent Hill. That’s where the vile attack took place.

Quick Reporting Leads to Arrest

The teen reported the savage assault immediately, allowing police to zero in on Nascimento at the same address just hours later. The predator was due to fly back to Brazil the next day — but thanks to the victim’s bravery, he was caught in time. Initially charged with one count of rape, further accusations piled up: three more rapes, two sexual assaults, and causing a person to incite sexual activity. Nascimento pleaded not guilty to all charges. After a two-week trial, the jury found him guilty of four rapes and inciting sexual activity on 2 February. He was cleared of sexual assault charges but remained behind bars awaiting sentencing.

Police Praise Victim’s Bravery

“We want to recognise the courage and resilience the victim has shown throughout,” said Detective Chief Inspector Steve Cobbett, Senior Investigating Officer. “Their quick reporting helped us arrest a dangerous predator before he could flee the country.” “Sexual offences can happen to anyone. Male victims often stay silent due to fear or stigma, so we urge them to come forward. You will be taken seriously and supported every step of the way.”
