The World Cup lands in the US this summer – and with it comes a very American twist. FIFA has confirmed a “Super Bowl-style half-time show” will kick off during the final. Say goodbye to your traditional 15-minute break, football fans.

Chris Martin and Coldplay to ‘Curate’ the Half-Time Spectacle

FIFA boss Gianni Infantino revealed Coldplay’s Chris Martin will “curate” the show. Whether that means they’ll perform or just oversee the event is still up in the air. Either way, they’re saying this half-time extravaganza will be a permanent fixture of future World Cups.

Football Fans Cry Foul Over Distraction

Social media is awash with groans from fans outside the US. The vibe? This feels totally wrong. Imagine being 3-0 down at the break and hearing Bruno Mars, Rihanna, or Coldplay booming out tunes. One fan tweeted:

“Imagine your country being 3:0 down and you hear this 😂💔”

The timing makes even less sense. Halftime is just 15 minutes. How on earth will players warm up, the stage be set up, and then taken down again? Expect an extended break, which could disrupt the flow and intensity of the game. Coaches and players won’t thank FIFA for that.

FIFA’s Cash Grab or Football’s Downfall?

This move might be a boon for artists landing the biggest global audience. FIFA will surely cash in too. But fans and players? They’re stuck enduring an interruption in football’s most sacred moment.
