Tragic Flood Death: Arbroath Man’s Car Swept Away Near Marykirk

The victim of a nightmare flooding incident near Marykirk has been identified as 61-year-old Peter Pelling from Arbroath. His car was swept away in floodwaters in the early hours of Friday, 20 October.

Emergency Teams Launch Desperate Search

Police were alerted at around 3am after reports of a man trapped in a vehicle caught in floodwater. Emergency services rushed to the scene and launched an intense search operation. After days of battling harsh conditions, rescue crews recovered Peter’s body and his car on Monday, 23 October.

Authorities confirmed there are no suspicious circumstances, and a full report will be sent to the Procurator Fiscal.

Family Heartbroken, Pay Tribute to “Kind and Loyal” Dad

In an emotional statement via Police Scotland, Peter’s family described him as a “very kind, loyal, and hardworking man.” They called him a much-loved son, brother, uncle, partner, and friend. The family said they are devastated by the “horrific and tragic accident.”

They also thanked the emergency workers for their relentless efforts despite challenging weather and flood conditions. The family has asked for privacy as they come to terms with their devastating loss.
