UK Drivers Back Alcolocks to Smash Drink-Driving
New RAC data reveals a whopping 82% of UK drivers want alcolocks—breathalyser ignition locks—rolled out to stop repeat drink-drivers in their tracks. Just 7% oppose the idea, and 12% are on the fence.
These clever devices stop a car starting if the driver’s breath shows alcohol over the limit. Already popular in Belgium, the Netherlands, Australia, New Zealand and the US, alcolocks are a proven brake on deadly drink-driving.
Who Should Be Forced to Use Alcolocks?
- 71% say every driver caught over the limit must install one.
- 23% want the rule to apply only to repeat offenders.
- Just 6% are unsure.
Support Hits All Ages – Even Grannies Say Yes
Support for alcolocks is strongest among young drivers, with 87% of under-25s and 86% of 25 to 44-year-olds on board. Even the 65+ group shows solid backing at 73%.
Drink-Driving Problem is Getting Worse
The RAC’s Report on Motoring 2025 warns drink-driving is creeping back to pre-pandemic levels. Shocking stats show 12% admit to driving while possibly over the legal limit. The risky behaviour spikes among youngsters — 14% of 25-44s and a staggering 18% of under-25s confess to it.
Government data puts drink-drive casualties at roughly 260 deaths and 1,600 serious injuries in 2023 alone.
“Drink-driving remains alarmingly high. Drivers want tougher action as current penalties aren’t cutting it,” said RAC road safety spokesperson Rod Dennis. “Courts should have power to require offenders to fit alcolocks. These devices save lives, as proven abroad, and a massive majority of drivers agree.”
“The Government’s upcoming Road Safety Strategy must bring this into sharp focus.”
