Sunak Claims Victory Over Asylum Backlog – But Critics Cry Foul

The UK Government says it has smashed its target to clear the asylum backlog. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak hailed the “relentless action” against illegal migration as the key factor. The Home Office revealed it processed over 112,000 asylum cases in 2023 — the highest yearly total since 2002.

Legacy Cases Cleared, But Complex Ones Linger

Sunak promised to tackle old “legacy” asylum claims by the end of 2023. The Home Office says every legacy case was reviewed, with 86,800 decisions made. However, 4,500 tricky cases remain unresolved. These involve alleged child asylum seekers, serious medical issues, or suspected criminal histories requiring extra checks.

On top of this, around 25,200 newer claims were processed. Officials insist they won’t sacrifice security or thorough investigations, which means some cases are still pending.

Labour and Watchdogs Slam Government Over “False” Asylum Claims

Labour slammed the government for overstating results, arguing figures don’t meet original targets. The National Audit Office warned the plans may not be sustainable. Meanwhile, the Home Affairs Committee revealed only a tiny fraction of Channel migrants have been sent home.

“The government’s approach treats people as statistics rather than human beings,” critics charge.

Sunak Stands Firm Amid Ongoing Migrant Row

Sunak admits the final asylum grant rate dropped to 67% in 2023 — below previous years. Still, he insists wiping out the backlog shows commitment to cracking down on illegal migration. The controversy highlights the huge challenges in managing Britain’s complex asylum system, with passionate views on all sides.
