UK Cracks Down on Iranian Threats with New Sanctions
The UK government is ramping up its response to threats from Iran. Foreign Secretary James Cleverly revealed that since January 2022, Iran’s regime has made 15 credible threats to harm or kidnap UK citizens or residents.
Sanctions Extend Beyond Human Rights
Until now, UK sanctions targeted Iranians involved in human rights abuses or nuclear activities. The new rules will go further. They’ll hit Iranian officials behind “hostile activities towards the UK and our partners” — including threats to people, property, and national security.
Crucially, those involved in sending missiles and drones from Iran to fuel Russia’s war effort also face the axe.
Targeting Tumults Abroad and Inside Iran
The Foreign Office warns Iran is stepping up efforts to hunt down enemies abroad, including on UK soil. The fresh sanctions will crack down on anyone undermining peace and security not only in the Middle East but globally. This includes actors who spread Iranian weapons and technology or work to weaken democracy and the rule of law.
Parliament Set to Approve Tougher Measures
Legislation to roll out these sanctions will hit Parliament later this year. Cleverly made clear the message to Tehran is loud and clear: “Malign behaviour won’t be tolerated and those responsible will be held to account.” He added the UK will offer no safe haven to those plotting harm.
Labour Demands Update on Revolutionary Guard Proscription
The Labour Party is pressing for clarity on banning Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). Shadow Foreign Secretary David Lammy stressed the strong calls from MPs and the Iranian diaspora for the proscription. While acknowledging tricky diplomatic waters, Lammy insists the UK must keep up the pressure.
