Trump Picks Ohio Senator JD Vance as Running Mate
Donald Trump has officially named Senator JD Vance of Ohio as his vice presidential pick for November’s US election. The surprise announcement came just before Trump accepted the presidential nomination at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee on Monday.
Secret Meeting at Mar-a-Lago
According to sources, Vance flew privately to Mar-a-Lago on Saturday morning to meet Trump. Only 20 minutes before going public with the news on social media, Trump personally called Vance to offer him the running mate spot.
From Marine to Bestselling Author
In a social media post, Trump praised Vance’s diverse background. He highlighted Vance’s service in the Marine Corps, degrees from Ohio State and Yale Law School, and his bestselling book Hillbilly Elegy, which Trump said “championed the hardworking men and women of our country.” Trump also noted Vance’s experience as a venture capitalist.
The New Face of the GOP Ticket
- Vance, 39, is one of the youngest VP nominees and a political newcomer with just 18 months as a senator.
- His selection over heavier hitters like Marco Rubio and Doug Burgum signals Trump’s focus on loyalty and public backing.
- Though absent at a recent rally when a gunman targeted Trump, Vance expressed strong support and helped raise funds for victims’ families.
From Critic to Ally
Once a vocal Trump critic, Vance has become one of his staunchest supporters. Earlier this year, he admitted on Fox News, “When you’re wrong about something, you should change your mind and be honest about it.”
Unlike Trump’s first VP Mike Pence, Vance has openly said he would have challenged the 2020 election results, including refusing to certify them on January 6.
Battle Lines Drawn for November
As the RNC rolls on, Trump and Vance prepare to take on the likely Democratic nominee, President Joe Biden. Despite questions over Biden’s mental fitness, he is expected to secure the Democratic nomination at their convention on August 19.
