Dramatic rescue mission underway to save nine stranded pilot whales off Sheppey
Whales Trapped on Mudflats
Nine pilot whales have become stranded on the treacherous mudflats off the coast of Sheppey, trapped by the low tide in the Swale earlier today. A major rescue operation has been launched to save the pod before the tide rises.
Elite Rescue Team on Scene
Thirty members of British Divers Marine Life Rescue (BDMLR) are battling tough conditions to reach the stranded whales. Two rescuers have managed to get to the animals so far, with more team members expected to arrive in the coming hours.
Race Against Time on Muddy Terrain
The mudflats are described as “shocking” and make the rescue exceptionally difficult. To tackle this, pontoons are being transported from London to help 4×4 vehicles ferry vital equipment across the challenging terrain.
Hope Rides on Incoming Tide
Rescuers are hopeful the whales will refloat once the tide comes back in during the early hours of Tuesday. The dramatic operation will continue into the night as teams fight to save these majestic creatures from disaster.
