Teen Migrant Opens Fire on NYPD During Traffic Stop
In a startling incident in Queens, New York, a 19-year-old Venezuelan migrant, Bernardo Raul Castro-Mata, allegedly shot two NYPD officers during what began as a routine traffic stop. Police tried to pull him over for riding an illegal scooter the wrong way down a one-way street. Castro-Mata responded by firing an unlicensed gun at the officers.
Gunfire Erupts at 2 a.m. — Officers Injured but Alive
The shooting happened just before 2 a.m. One officer was hit in the leg, while the other was protected by a bulletproof vest but still injured. Despite his wounds, Castro-Mata fled the scene on foot. NYPD detectives suspect he is linked to a violent scooter robbery gang operating in Queens.
Migrant Shelter Resident with No Prior Arrests
Castro-Mata, who entered the US last July via Eagle Pass, Texas, was living in a nearby migrant shelter. Authorities say he has no prior arrests in New York but is under investigation for other robbery sprees. After the encounter, he was wounded in the ankle and had surgery at NewYork-Presbyterian Queens hospital.
Community Cheers as Officers Leave Hospital
Both injured officers were hailed as heroes, receiving a standing ovation upon leaving Elmhurst Hospital. The incident has fuelled fierce debate over immigration policies, especially amid reports of increasing asylum approvals under President Biden’s administration. Officials vow to ramp up efforts to improve border security and protect communities nationwide.
