Tragic Crash: Four-Year-Old Boy Killed After Being ‘Rammed’ Off Kent Road

The heartbroken mother of a four-year-old boy killed in a terrifying crash has revealed she had a chilling premonition that something terrible was about to happen. Hayley Maughan told the court how panic gripped her as her cousin and his father “chased” her family along the A2 in Kent, before the fatal smash.

Chased at High Speed on A2

At Maidstone Crown Court, Ms Maughan described the desperate chase involving her family in their Ford pick-up and the two other vehicles driven by 27-year-old Owen Maughan and his 54-year-old father Patrick Maughan. She said, “I was panicking so bad. They were chasing us. We begged them to stop – the kids were in the car.”

Prosecutor Richard Jory KC slammed Owen Maughan’s actions as a “deliberate ramming at high speed,” accusing him of using his car as a weapon to push the family’s vehicle off the road at around 60mph near Pepper Hill, Northfleet.

    Horrific Aftermath

The crash left the family’s Ford pick-up flipping and crashing violently. Ms Maughan frantically searched the back seats but her son Peter was missing. Jurors heard the tragic boy had been thrown from the vehicle, suffering “severe and devastating injuries” to his head, chest, and abdomen that left him with no chance.

She found Peter face down in the grass and screamed for help.

  • Boy Admits Stoning Man to Death at Kent Beach Over ‘Paedophile’ Claim

Boy Admits Stoning Man to Death at Kent Beach Over ‘Paedophile’ Claim

A 16-year-old boy has confessed to hurling stones at a man who later died after being brutally attacked on a beach in Kent. The victim, accused of being a paedophile, was chased down and battered with rocks and a bottle before being found face down in the mud.

Attack Fueled by Fake Messages and Misinformation

Prosecutors revealed the horrifying details in court, where the teenager admitted to striking the man after a series of messages prompted him to believe the victim had inappropriate intentions. The boy met the victim, Mr Cashford, after he gave the girl’s number at an amusement arcade on August 8.
Using a fake name, “Sienna,” the girl and her two accomplices exchanged texts with Mr Cashford and arranged a meeting near the sea wall on August 10, leading to the deadly confrontation.

Bottle Blows and Brutal Assault Caught on Camera

Court footage showed the 16-year-old hitting Mr Cashford on the back of the head with a beer bottle — which did not break on impact — before attempting to strike him again. The boy admitted he wanted to hurt Mr Cashford but insisted he didn’t expect to cause serious injury.

“I saw the bottle and I picked it up. I wasn’t really sure what was going through my head,” he told jurors.

After the attack, the defendants fled the scene, with the female accomplice filming the assault on the defendant’s phone, while she shouted, “F****** paedophile. I’m f****** 16.”

Victim’s Injuries Were Severe and Deadly

A post-mortem examination revealed Mr Cashford suffered multiple injuries, including facial bruises, fractured ribs that punctured a lung, and head trauma. Despite the brutal attack, the trio deny murder charges. The 16-year-old boy has pleaded guilty to manslaughter, while the girl and a 15-year-old boy involved deny all charges.

Teen Claims Police Wouldn’t Have Acted

Under questioning, the boy revealed he took screenshots of the texts after the attack to prove he was trying to meet the teenage girl. When asked if he thought he was doing the right thing by attacking the man, he answered, “Yeah, kind of, yeah.”

He said he felt the police “wouldn’t have done anything” if he had reported the man, and expressed a desire for authorities to “lock him up.”

    Trial Ongoing

The case continues with all defendants denying murder. The brutal nature of the attack and the motives behind it are under scrutiny at the court hearing.

Gravesend Girl, 9, Drowns After Slipping into Thames at Jetty

A heartbreaking inquest has revealed how nine-year-old Luiza “Bia” Paun tragically drowned after slipping into the River Thames while playing on a jetty in Gravesend.

Girl Slips Into River While Playing at Gordon Promenade

On May 30 last year, Luiza, from Wrotham Road in Gravesend, was playing near the water at the Gordon Promenade when she took off her shoes and slipped into the river. Despite heroic efforts by nearby members of the public who jumped in to save her, she was swept away by the current and disappeared beneath the water.

Massive Search Operation Fails to Save Young Girl

    • Emergency services, including Kent Police marine units, the coastguard helicopter, and RNLI lifeboats, launched a massive search for Luiza and two boys who got into trouble in the water.
    • The boy, believed to be seven, was rescued and taken to the hospital in stable condition.
    • Tragically, Luiza’s body was not found until the next day, near Newbridge Causeway, behind the Gravesend Rowing Club house, where she is thought to have entered the river.

A nearby witness, George Karnovski, described pulling the boy out of the water while frantically searching for Luiza, but she was nowhere to be seen.

“At the same time as pulling him out, I was looking around, shouting ‘there is one more’. I couldn’t find the little girl anywhere,” said the 37-year-old rescuer.

Community Mourns, Calls for Better River Safety

Following the tragedy, floral tributes and soft toys were left at the site, with messages like “Rest in peace, little one” and “May you find eternal peace in the arms of angels.”

Luiza’s family, believed to be from Romania, has described her as a “beautiful angel” with her whole life ahead of her. Gravesham MP Dr Lauren Sullivan expressed her deepest condolences and praised the emergency services for their efforts.

“I know there are many opinions about the circumstances, and it is right there is an investigation,” Dr Sullivan said. “But at the heart of this is a family and community in grief, which I hope everyone can respect.”

The inquest heard Luiza was playing with her cousin near the water when she slipped and was pulled in by the current.

Residents have since urged for increased safety measures along the riverbank. Suggestions include more warning signs about the dangers, with some written in multiple languages to better protect visitors.

    Next Steps

The full inquest into Luiza’s death is scheduled for March 18 at Oakwood House, Maidstone.

Her tragic story is a stark reminder of the hidden dangers that rivers pose, especially to children. Calls for tighter river safety measures are growing louder in Gravesend and beyond.

Kent Police are backing a national firearms amnesty targeting dangerous illegal weapons. From Monday 2 February to Friday 27 February 2026, owners of certain illegal blank-firing guns can hand them in — no questions asked.

Beware: These Bruni Models Are Now Banned

Side and top-venting blank-firing (TVBF) guns are legal unless they’re easily converted into real firearms. The National Crime Agency tested five models from Italian maker Bruni and found them readily convertible, making them illegal without a licence.

    The banned models are:

    • 8mm PAK Bruni BBM Model 92 blank-firing self-loading pistol
    • 8mm PAK Bruni BBM New Police blank-firing self-loading pistol
    • 8mm PAK Bruni BBM Model 96 blank-firing self-loading pistol
    • 8mm PAK Bruni BBM Model ‘GAP’ blank-firing self-loading pistol
    • .380R (9mmK) PAK Bruni BBM ME Ranger single-action blank-firing revolver

Hand Them In — Or Face Up to 10 Years Inside

During the amnesty, no one handing in these firearms will face prosecution. But from 28 February, those found with banned Bruni guns could be arrested and jailed for up to 10 years.

Firearms can be surrendered at these Kent police stations:

    • Canterbury – Old Dover Road
    • Folkestone – Bouverie Road West
    • Maidstone – Palace Avenue
    • Margate – Fort Hill
    • Medway – Purser Way, Gillingham
    • North Kent – Thames Way, Northfleet
    • Tonbridge – Pembury Road

If you plan to surrender a TVBF, travel directly to the police station. Always keep the firearm concealed in public — even inside the station until instructed otherwise.

Police Warn: These Guns Have Been Used in Murder

“We expect many owners don’t realise their guns are illegal or meant for crime,” said Detective Chief Inspector Martin Davies. “This amnesty aims to get these dangerous weapons off our streets, protecting communities from harm. It also offers owners a safe way to hand them in without fear of prosecution.”

“Kent is a safe place with low gun crime, but we’re vigilant. Over 70 converted Bruni TVBF devices have been seized across the UK tied to various crimes. Since 2023, converted Side/TVBFs have been linked to at least five homicides nationally. These weapons are deadly once converted, so we must stop them falling into the wrong hands.”
