Police have closed a bridge in Hilsea after a man fell from it today.
Emergency services supported by Hampshire Air Ambulance rushed to the scene near the bus interchange this lunchtime to battle to save the man.
Shocked workers who were working on a nearby bus shelter claim that the person fell from the bridge and landed on the road below which is a main thoroughfare in and out of Portsmouth.
Police cordoned off both sides of the bridge and have launched an investigation to work out what happened.
The incident happened just after 12.15 this afternoon (30th November).
Emergency services remain on the scene. Traffic is building up and buses are unable to stop at the interchange.
A spokesperson from South Central Ambulance said that the man in his 40s received multiple injuries from falling 40ft from the bridge and had been taken to Southampton General Hospital by air ambulance with potentially life-threatening injuries.
