Police appeal after Scumbag Snatches and Attacks Pensioner in Southampton

Police are appealing for witnesses after an 82-year-old woman was robbed of her handbag whilst walking through Watts Park on Monday 1 January just before 11.30am. The woman, having just been for a coffee with a friend in town, entered Watts Park via the junction of Above Bar and Commercial Road. A man has then approached her and grabbed her handbag from her shoulder, knocking her to the ground in process. The man has then ran off with her belongings. The man has been described as young and 5’ 7” tall. The woman was treated in hospital and left with a fractured shoulder and heavy bruising as a result. It is reported that as the man ran off, another man has tried to help the woman and chased after him. Detective Constable Martin Brewer from the Western Investigation Team at Southampton Central Police Station said: “We are really keen to speak to the man who chased after the suspect and any other person who was in Watts Park on New Year’s Day who saw this incident or saw a man running through the park or along the surrounding roads. “This was a cowardly crime against a vulnerable member of the community who was simply walking through the park with a friend. If you saw anything or have information that can assist us, please get in contact.” If you have any information relating to this case, please call 101 quoting reference ‘44180000667’, or contact Crimestoppers anonymously.
