High Wycombe Man Jailed for Deadly Crash That Killed Cyclist
A High Wycombe man has been locked up for eight-and-a-half years for causing death by dangerous driving. Sakib Salim, 28, was sentenced at Aylesbury Crown Court last Friday (27 April) after pleading guilty.
Dangerous Driving Ends in Tragedy
On the night of 16 January 2017, Sakib Salim was speeding and racing along Hicks Farm Rise when his black Volkswagen Golf smashed head-on into 28-year-old cyclist David Pickup. The Golf ignored a ‘keep left’ bollard and crossed into the wrong lane, fatally injuring David who died on the spot.
Sakib didn’t stop at the scene. Instead, he carried on driving towards Totteridge Lane, leaving a trail of devastation behind.
Sister Sentenced for Cover-Up
Sakib’s sister, Rozia Salim, 27, also caught the book for helping cover it up. She lied to cops, claiming the Golf had been sold the day before the crash. Rozia got 14 months in prison for perverting the course of justice.
Justice for David Pickup
Following the sentencing, Detective Sergeant Beth Walton from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit said:
“David’s death and the events leading up to it have been devastating to his family and friends. I am pleased that our team’s hard work gathered enough evidence to charge Sakib and Rozia Salim, leading both to plead guilty after months of silence and no remorse.”
“We proved Sakib was driving and that Rozia lied to protect him. No sentence can undo the tragedy of 16 January 2017, but it’s right they are held accountable for their reckless actions.”
Both siblings have now been barred from driving, with Sakib disqualified for 12 years and three months.
DS Walton added: “I hope they use their time in prison to reflect on their actions and the heartbreak they have caused the Pickup family.”
