Firefighters rush to tackle blazing power pole at busy holiday park
Fire crews from Shanklin and Sandown have scrambled to douse a high voltage power pole fire at Lower Hyde Holiday Park in Shanklin on Saturday evening. The blaze forced the evacuation of part of the bustling holiday site, packed with residents and Easter tourists.
Cordon in place as firefighters battle blaze
Emergency services quickly set up a safety cordon around the fire zone. Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue teams are working hand-in-hand with Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) to secure the area and prevent further danger.
Hundreds left in darkness across Isle of Wight
The inferno has knocked out power to hundreds of homes across the island. A high voltage network fault is affecting households in Whiteley Bank, Wroxall, Godshill and neighbouring areas.
Power cut hits 700 homes, engineers race to restore supply
SSEN revealed that 57 postcodes, mostly within PO38, and another 13 in PO37, are experiencing outages. A spokesperson said:
“We’re sorry for the loss of supply. Our engineers are on site working hard to get the power back on as quickly as possible. We hope to restore electricity to all 700 affected properties by 4am.”
Residents and holidaymakers are urged to stay clear of the area while crews work to contain the blaze and bring back the power.
