Anglian Water Hit with £50,000 Fine for Cover-Up
Anglian Water Services Ltd has been slapped with a hefty £50,190 fine by the Environment Agency. The water giant failed to hand over crucial records, breaching legal orders. The total penalty includes a £25,000 fine, a £190 victim surcharge, plus £25,000 in legal costs.
First-Ever Legal Crackdown on Water Company
This is a landmark moment — the first time the Environment Agency has taken a water company to court for non-compliance. The case sets a tough precedent, sending a warning shot to firms shirking their environmental duties.
Investigation Uncovers Serious Failures
The probe revealed Anglian Water ignored multiple official requests between January 2022 and January 2023. Despite pleading not guilty, the company’s excuse was shot down by District Judge Kenneth Sheraton.
“Anglian Water failed, without reasonable excuse, to comply with statutory record requests,” the judge ruled.
The case is part of a wider criminal investigation into all ten English water firms. Authorities are scrutinising over 2,000 wastewater treatment sites for environmental breaches.
