Around 100 firefighters and 15 fire engines have tackled a major blaze at a waste facility in Dagenham, with residents warned to keep their windows and doors closed because of significant smoke. London Fire Brigade crews were called to the waste facility on Chequers Lane, Dagenham, at 3.26am following reports of a fire. The scale of the incident prompted a major emergency response, with crews from Dagenham, Barking, East Ham and surrounding stations sent to the scene. Two of the Brigade’s turntable ladders were deployed as firefighters battled the blaze. A specialist Hose Laying Unit and High Volume Pump were also mobilised to increase the water supply available across the incident ground.
Fire brought under control after four hours
Firefighters worked for more than four hours before bringing the blaze under control at 7.43am. Despite the fire being contained, crews are expected to remain at the site throughout Sunday morning damping down and dealing with remaining hotspots and smaller fires. The incident has generated a significant amount of smoke, prompting a warning to people living nearby. Station Commander Graham Beers, speaking from the scene, said: “This is a large incident that will see crews working hard through the morning to ensure any remaining fires are extinguished. “Residents in the nearby area should keep doors and windows closed where possible as the fire is producing a significant amount of smoke.”
Protracted operation expected
The emergency response is expected to continue for some time while firefighters make the site safe and ensure there is no further spread of fire. People in the surrounding area may continue to see a significant emergency service presence while operations continue. There has been no confirmation at this stage of any injuries. The cause of the fire is not yet known and further investigations are expected once conditions at the site allow.
