Thug Snatches Handbag from 78-Year-Old, Leaving Her Injured on Norwood Road
Pierre Garcia-Benitez, 25, of Norwood Road, SE24, pleaded guilty to robbery after violently snatching a handbag from a 78-year-old woman in broad daylight.
Attack Shocks Local Community
On the morning of 26 April, the elderly woman had just withdrawn £200 from the local post office when Garcia-Benitez, lurking behind her, lunged for her handbag.
She struggled to keep hold, but he yanked it free, causing her to fall hard onto the pavement.
Good Samaritans Chase, But Purse Lost
Passersby rushed to her aid, including a brave passerby who leapt from his vehicle to pursue the robber. Garcia-Benitez panicked and discarded the bag before fleeing.
Police recovered some items, but the purse containing the £200 cash and precious family photos was never found.

- Media appeal issued
Officers identified Garcia-Benitez, arresting him on 19 June.
He faced Westminster Magistrates’ Court two days later before being bailed to appear at Inner London Crown Court.
Justice On the Horizon
On 19 July, Garcia-Benitez pleaded guilty. Sentencing is set for 8 September.
“The victim was left upset and shaken,” said PC Alex Earley. “It’s incomprehensible someone could attack such a vulnerable woman and leave her lying in the street.”
“We gathered so much evidence that Garcia-Benitez had no choice but to plead guilty. I hope this gives the victim justice and closure.”
