Skepta in court over cannabis charge
Grammy-nominated grime artist Skepta, real name Joseph Adenuga, 43, has appeared in court over a drug-driving charge. The High Wycombe Magistrates’ Court heard how the music heavyweight tested positive for cannabis during a roadside stop in Buckinghamshire last May. Adenuga, who pleaded not guilty, was pulled over by Thames Valley Police on 14 May 2024 after being spotted driving recklessly on London Road. PC Talan O’Neill told the court he saw Skepta overtake another car at speed, breaking the 30mph limit.
Roadside test leads to arrest
The officer described smelling cannabis inside Skepta’s Mercedes-Maybach when he stopped the vehicle. A roadside drug test at 10.54am confirmed the presence of THC – the psychoactive ingredient in cannabis. Adenuga was immediately arrested and taken in for further testing. Prosecutor Lucy Curran said Skepta was cooperative throughout the process. The trial is ongoing.
From grime legend to court drama
Skepta is one of UK music’s most influential figures. Since his 2007 debut album, he’s won the Mercury Prize and crossed into fashion, modelling, and film. Despite fame, Skepta has admitted he struggles with celebrity life. “I hate being famous,” he told Dazed magazine. “I care about art. I care about making the best song. I don’t care about fame. Really.” He dreams of a quieter life away from the spotlight.
A family of UK grime royalty
Skepta hails from a creative dynasty. His brother JME, aka Jamie Adenuga, is a fellow grime star and part of the Boy Better Know crew. Their sister Julie Adenuga is a popular radio presenter and broadcaster. This high-profile trial is sure to captivate fans and critics alike as Skepta fights the charges in court.
