Hero Dog Oliver Scoops Top PDSA Honour for Helping Crime Victims

Oliver, a six-year-old black labrador, has just bagged a prestigious medal for his incredible work with Kent Police. This specially trained pooch comforts victims and witnesses after traumatic experiences, providing calm and reassurance when they need it most.

From America to Kent: The Dog Making a Difference

Oliver arrived in the UK all the way from America in 2018 and has been breaking new ground ever since. He’s part of a unique project between Kent Police and Canterbury Christchurch University—the first of its kind in the UK. His mission? Help vulnerable victims and witnesses during police interviews.

Detective Constable Rachel Freeman, who works alongside Oliver, said, “I first encountered Oliver during officer training at our police college. I knew dogs like him were helping victims in America and Canada, and hoped we’d have them here one day. Now it’s a reality.”

Oliver’s handlers, psychologists Dr Elizabeth Spruin and Dr Katarina Mozova, have trained him to support those in distress, making police stations a less scary place for the vulnerable.

A Paw of Comfort When It Counts

Oliver’s calm presence works wonders. “He often sits quietly by someone’s feet, offering reassurance. Children especially love him, frequently reaching out for cuddles,” said DC Freeman.

“I watched him place his paw gently on a young girl’s back while she faced tough questions, letting her know he was there with her.”

This little gesture shows Oliver’s ability to sense emotions and respond with gentle care—qualities that make a massive difference in tough moments.

Recognition for a True Canine Hero

Oliver was awarded the PDSA Order of Merit at a London ceremony on 14 July 2022. This top animal honour recognises outstanding devotion to society.

“Oliver is a worthy recipient,” said PDSA Vet Nurse Nina Downing. “We were deeply moved by his life-changing actions and are proud to celebrate his pioneering role assisting those in need.”

DC Freeman added, “I’m so proud of Oliver and hope his award inspires police forces across the UK to adopt similar projects. Dogs like him are helping make police stations less intimidating and giving victims much-needed support.”
