Mason Mount Swaps Chelsea for Man United in £55m Deal

Mason Mount, 24, has ditched his boyhood club Chelsea to join Manchester United. The England midfielder is Erik ten Hag’s first big signing this summer, with an initial fee of £55 million – plus potential add-ons worth £5 million.

Mount Excited by Ten Hag’s Vision

Mount has signed a five-year contract with an option for an extra year. The midfielder said, “Having met with the manager and discussed his plans, I couldn’t be more excited for the seasons ahead.” He praised United’s progress under Ten Hag, adding, “Everyone can see that the club has made big steps forward under Erik ten Hag. I am hugely ambitious; I know how amazing it feels to win major trophies and what it takes to do it. I will be giving everything to experience that again at Manchester United.”

Chelsea Tried to Keep Him but Had to Sell

Negotiations with Chelsea were tough. The Blues rejected three bids before finally agreeing to sell Mount. Chelsea’s £600 million spending spree last season, combined with Financial Fair Play rules, forced their hand. Although Chelsea wanted to keep him, contract talks stalled as his deal was due to expire next year.

New Challenge at Old Trafford

Leaving Chelsea, where he debuted in 2019 and notched 33 goals in 195 appearances, was a tough call. Mount admitted it wasn’t easy but is eager for a fresh challenge with United. “Having competed against them, I know just how strong a squad it is that I’m joining, and I can’t wait to be part of this group’s drive to win major trophies,” he said.

Fans will be watching closely as Mount steps into Ten Hag’s plans, hoping he can fire United back to glory after Chelsea’s rare slump to 12th in the Premier League last season.
