A 31-year-old man has been jailed for murder after police used CCTV footage and DNA evidence to link him to the violent killing of Mussie Imnetu in south east London.
Omar Wilson, of Napier Road, Leytonstone, was sentenced to 18 years in prison on Friday, February 28, after being found guilty of murder at the Old Bailey on February 20.
Brutal Attack and CCTV Evidence
Wilson attacked Mussie Imnetu, 41, on Queensway, W2, at 11:22 pm on August 26, 2024.
Mussie, a respected chef visiting the UK from Dubai, was found unconscious with a severe head injury. Police were on the scene within seconds, providing first aid before paramedics arrived.
Despite urgent medical treatment, Mussie died in hospital on August 30.
Wilson fled the scene immediately after the attack but dropped his sunglasses, house keys, and car keys.
Detectives were able to recover his DNA from the sunglasses, and the keys were found to be a perfect match for his home and car.
Nightclub Visit After Murder
In a shocking revelation, Wilson was caught on CCTV footage travelling across London—just 90 minutes after the attack—to a nightclub on Gaunt Street.
Police pieced together his journey from the crime scene to the club, where he continued his night out as if nothing had happened.
His phone records also placed him in Queensway at the time of the attack.
Incriminating Messages and Confession
Despite later claiming self-defense, Wilson admitted his guilt in text messages sent to friends after the murder.
In one message, he wrote:
? “There’s a monster in me … and it’s just like sometimes it comes out. And I think I’ve messed up now … and everything’s finished.”
? “I’ve f*** up … I crossed the line and went overboard. I don’t think I can come back from this mistake … I’m going jail in the morning.”**
In another, he confessed:
? “I did the hands ting … finished one guy man.”
One friend even advised him to “get a solicitor and use your ADHD” in his defense.
Murder Charge and Conviction
Wilson was arrested on August 28, 2024, and charged the following day.
Despite his claims of self-defense, a jury found him guilty of murder, leading to his 18-year sentence.
Police Condemn ‘Senseless Violence’
Detective Chief Inspector Brian Howie, who led the investigation, expressed his condolences to Mussie’s family and friends in Dubai, Sweden, and London.
“Mussie was a loving husband, father, son, and a respected chef. He was in London for a few days to help train his colleagues and went out that evening to enjoy the post-Notting Hill Carnival atmosphere, where tragically he was violently assaulted.
