A comprehensive study by Transport for London (TfL) has confirmed that 20mph speed limits have significantly reduced road casualties across the capital, offering strong evidence in support of London’s ongoing Vision Zero campaign.
Key Findings from TfL’s Report
- 34% drop in people killed or seriously injured (KSI) on borough roads.
- 40% reduction in overall fatalities.
- 75% reduction in child fatalities.
- 35% fewer collisions in areas with 20mph limits.
- No evidence that lower speed limits increased congestion.
The study examined over 150 road schemes implemented between 1989 and 2013, covering long-term trends to better understand the impact of speed reductions on safety.
TfL and City Officials React
TfL’s Chief Safety, Health and Environment Officer Lilli Matson called the findings “hugely important,” adding:
“Lower speed limits save lives. No death or serious injury on London’s streets is acceptable or inevitable, and we are determined that London continues to be at the forefront of making real and lasting change.”
Walking and Cycling Commissioner Will Norman echoed the sentiment:
“This compelling new analysis shows clearly that lowering speeds is saving lives… Slower speeds not only protect the most vulnerable, they also help create safer, more welcoming streets.”
Part of the Vision Zero Strategy
The research supports the Mayor of London’s Vision Zero goal: eliminating all deaths and serious injuries on London’s transport network. Since 2018, over 264km of 20mph limits have been introduced, with more than half of London’s roads now enforcing the lower limit.
