TfL study reveals 20mph limits slash London road deaths and injuries! The latest report from Transport for London confirms that cutting speed limits to 20mph has drastically improved road safety across the capital – a major win for the city’s Vision Zero campaign.
Staggering Safety Stats Unveiled
- 34% plunge in people killed or seriously injured on borough roads.
- 40% dip in overall fatalities.
- 75% drop in child deaths on the roads.
- 35% fewer collisions where 20mph limits apply.
- No proof that slower speeds cause traffic congestion.
The study analysed more than 150 road schemes from 1989 to 2013, revealing long-term trends proving lower speeds save lives.
TfL Bosses and Officials Praise Results
TfL’s Chief Safety, Health and Environment Officer Lilli Matson said:
“Lower speed limits save lives. No death or serious injury on London’s streets is acceptable or inevitable. We’re determined that London leads in making real change.”
Walking and Cycling Commissioner Will Norman added:
“This new analysis shows clearly that slowing speeds protects the most vulnerable and creates safer, more welcoming streets.”
Driving Vision Zero Forward
The findings back Mayor of London’s Vision Zero goal to eliminate all road deaths and serious injuries. Since 2018, over 264km of 20mph zones have been added, with more than half of London’s roads now enforcing the lower limit.
Communities and Campaigners Back 20mph Cuts
Jeremy Leach of 20’s Plenty for Us said:
“TfL’s research backs up what other studies show: streets are safer with 20mph limits, letting more people walk, wheel and cycle.”
Newham Councillor Sarah Ruiz stated:
“Slowing traffic is essential for safety. The stats prove 20mph limits save lives and boost sustainable travel.”
What’s Next for London’s Streets?
TfL has announced plans to expand 20mph speed zones further in 2026. Boroughs yet to adopt the measure face calls to act fast following this hard-hitting evidence.
