Activity bodies praise residents for heeding ‘responsible exercise’ call

The heads of the county’s Public Health operation and Active Surrey have urged people to continue following official guidance on the need to stay home and exercise responsibly.

With the Easter bank holiday weekend upon us, with weather getting warmer, people will no doubt be tempted to venture out.

While exercise and fresh air remain important to keep a healthy body and mind during the Coronavirus lockdown, it is essential that everybody follows the guidance and stays local when going outside.

Active Surrey – the advocates for physical activity across the county – have also put together a whole range of activities and classes that can be done inside.

Ruth Hutchinson, Interim Director of Public Health for Surrey County Council says “Lighter nights and long, dry days are normally a signal for us all to forget about winter and become more sociable, but these aren’t normal times.

“The public response has generally been fantastic but as we head towards the peak of this phase of the virus this weekend it’s vital that we stick to the good habits we’ve adopted in the last two weeks and only mix with those from our own household. It might sound dramatic but doing this really can protect the NHS and save lives.”

Active Surrey are keen to praise residents for getting behind the need to think differently about exercising.

Lil Duggan, Active Surrey Managing Director comments: “It’s great that more people are truly appreciating the benefits of getting out but we need to ensure we’re doing so safely. Whether you’re jogging, cycling or just going for a walk in the woods please remember to keep at least 2 metres away from others and ‘stay local’ when getting your daily dose of exercise.
