NHS Faces Busiest Summer Ever in England

The NHS has endured its busiest summer on record for accident and emergency (A&E) departments in England. Between June and August, 6.8 million patients hit A&E — that’s 240,776 more than last year. Staff are battling rising urgent care demand as the pressure on the health service escalates.

Emergency Admissions and Ambulance Pressure Soar

August 2024 saw 525,633 emergency admissions, up from 523,881 in August 2023. Despite this spike, NHS teams impressively admitted, transferred, or discharged 76.3% of A&E patients within four hours — a 3.3-percentage point boost from last year and the best performance since 2021.

Ambulance crews responded to 730,669 incidents in August, including 73,630 critical Category 1 emergencies. Though response times still exceed the 7-minute target, average speed has improved to 8 minutes 3 seconds, down from 8 minutes 17 seconds last August. Category 2 call response times also dropped, now just 27 minutes 25 seconds versus 31 minutes 30 seconds a year ago.

Cancer Care Sees Record Referrals and Treatments

Cancer services show signs of recovery. The NHS hit its faster cancer diagnosis target for the third month running, with over 220,000 people receiving a diagnosis or all-clear within 28 days. July 2024 smashed records with 286,720 urgent cancer referrals, while cancer treatments rose 15% year-on-year to 58,875 — the highest ever for a single month.

Challenges Remain Despite Progress

The NHS still faces major hurdles, including a backlog of 7.62 million patients waiting for elective procedures. Encouragingly, the number waiting over a year has dropped to 290,326, the lowest since December 2020.

Professor Sir Stephen Powis, NHS National Medical Director, said: “We’re hugely grateful to NHS staff for their incredible efforts. We’ve seen improvements in ambulance response, waiting times, and cancer diagnosis. But waits remain unacceptable, and more must be done to provide timely care.”

Powis warned of a looming “tripledemic” this winter caused by RSV, covid, and flu viruses, which could further strain the system. The NHS has kicked off vaccination campaigns targeting these illnesses to ease pressure in the coming months.

Looking Ahead: A 10-Year Plan for NHS Care

As demand grows and winter looms, the NHS is working closely with the government on a 10-year strategy to improve care and slash waiting times nationwide. The health service hopes this long-term plan will help ease ongoing challenges and deliver better outcomes for patients across England.
