Good progress has been made in tackling the massive fire at Christopher Martin Industrial Estate. Fire chiefs from Essex Fire & Rescue say the blaze is now under control.
Relief Crews Take Over as Firefighters Battle Hidden Hotspots
Four fresh crews will take over at 11.30am Sunday to continue tackling the aftermath. At the height of the blaze, 16 fire engines and over 100 firefighters fought the fierce flames. Damage to the building has been severe, with collapsed sections blocking access to pockets of fire inside. A mechanical digger will soon move debris so crews can safely extinguish remaining hotspots.
Molten Syrup Leak Fuels Environmental Concerns
During the blaze, molten syrup leaked from the site, spreading across the scene. Firefighters are teaming up with the Environment Agency and Anglian Water to stop the syrup from contaminating nearby watercourses.
Incident Commander Martyn Hare said: “Moving the collapsed parts will create more smoke, so we advise locals to keep doors and windows shut.” “Our crews have done a superb job controlling the fire, but we’ll be here for some time. Specialist measures are in place to protect the watercourse from leaked material.” “Thank you to everyone in the area for your patience and support.”
